The birds are a mixture of inland and water birds , as well as resident and migrant birds. The migrant water birds can be seen from October to march. This is when water and food are abundant in Chobe.

Among the many birds seen in the Chobe region you will find...

  • Vultures
  • Fish Eagle
  • Owls
  • Kingfishers
  • Hornbills
  • Robins
  • Ducks
  • Doves
  • Geese
When i visited Kasane in January (one of the peak months of the rainy season) i saw a lot of birds along the river front.

Most of these were migrant water birds like the Egyptian Duck attracted by the abundant water and food supply . Many other bird species can be found inland within the Chobe National Park.

So the best way to experience a complete birding safari in Kasane is to take both a game drive in the Chobe National Park and a boat cruise on the Chobe River.

Below are some pictures i took while bird watching on my Chobe vacation .

Birding Safari Tips

  1. Feel free to ask you tour guide the names of the birds you see if you are unfamiliar with them.
  2. Also if there is a specific bird species you want to see, ask the guide to help you spot it.They usually know where most birds can be seen.
  3. If you are planning on taking pictures on your game drive, try and get a seat by the side. It makes it easier to take photos.

Don't forget to bring your camera ,binoculars and a bird watching guide, :-)...
